DIY Vintage Clock

Today I wanted to share how we made a old vintage barrel top into a clock........

DIY Vintage Clock

We found this awesome wooden top to a barrel in one of our local junk shops, of course I had to paint it white and I was using it for a tray for a while......

I had it stored away as it was kind of big and now I am learning to decorate for my size house, which is small.  LOL

I had a thought that we could make a clock out of the top, using the white side.....

We quickly realized that it would not work because of the clock mechanism was to big and the wood was just to thick for the short rod to go through the wood. Hmmm ok now what to do...... Hubby said lets just turn it around? hmmmmm I gasped and said what? Not on the white side??? Oh dear! LOL OK well when we turned it around it really looked good and it would really pop more against the light walls.....  Cool.....

The wood on the bottom was really thick so it still needed to be routed out for a place for the clock mechanism to sit.

Ok let me back up......... we took these guts from the old clock I had hanging in the living room for a while so we had to work with what we had on hand........

OK so now back to my story........

We.... well... really Hubby, routed out a space in the back for the clock guts while I stray painted the arms as they were black and would be hard to see against the dark wood.

I used a silver metallic spray paint, it was a quick fix and made them stand out a lot better.

Now the back...........

Fit in nicely, we added the battery back in and we had a clock..........

Now it sits on the wall without numbers, not sure if I will add any yet. I might wait to see if I can come across any vintage numbers in my junkin searches. The kids could not understand how we are going to tell time now, without the numbers......LOL What?!?!? Yeah they really need to learn the "old fashioned" way we tell time, not the digital kind.

I am really glad how it turned out and it is a one of a kind, that is for sure.......

Some love it and others not so much, just depends on your taste I guess........

Ok well that was easy, now I want to change all my clocks to a one of a kind creation......

I hope that give you some inspiration to make your own one of a kind clock......

Let me know what you can turn into a clock?

Thanks for stopping in today, I hope you are having a great day.....

Be Blessed,

  1. Hi Debra,
Beautiful job on this clock. I like the 'dark side' and that you painted the hands silver. I tried to do this project one time....the step that I didn't do was routing out the back. So my clock was a was going to be wonderful was a photo of my father in law in his college football uniform mounted on a block of wood. It was going to go in my son's sports themed room. I could not get it to work, and I just gave up. Oh well, some projects turn out that way. Yours is great! :)

    1. Thanks for stopping in and leaving a sweet comment hun. :-) I know that sometimes the things I try fail, it just part of being creative I guess. Have a great day.

  2. Such a wonderful project. I love the dark side for a clock on the wall. I love that you repurposed a former project into something new. Great use of that thrift find. So glad you shared with us at Merry Monday.

    1. Thanks hun, I am still loving how it came out and I hope to change all my clocks in the house to a one of a kind piece some day....LOL For now I will just look for some vintage numbers for this clock. Thanks again and have a great day. :-)
